In 2016, Ramp Local label-head Jake Saunders lived in a bedroom adjacent to Michael Kolb in a small Bushwick apartment. It was during this time that Saunders discovered Kolb’s natural songwriting abilities and - even more obvious - his unmistakably powerful singing voice through the thin wall separating their rooms. Through those walls, Saunders heard the early work of a genius pop musician in the making. Many of those songs see the light of day for the first time on Making Moves.

Soon after a departure from performing in the opera and classical scenes of New York, Kolb began recording from home and writing the music that would eventually become his first official release. The whimsical approach to composition and enthusiasm for technical craft sets him apart from most bedroom pop artists, offering a refreshingly dynamic sound that defies categorization. On Making Moves, Kolb establishes himself as a raw yet inviting voice amongst the current wave of modern pop composers. Lush instrumental landscapes fill space with epic, sometimes orchestral-esque backdrops for Kolb’s razor-sharp vocals to slice right through. On “Car Song,” Kolb simulates momentum through samples of rushing cars, a vigorous groove propels the track forward and synths fill in the space around it.  The use of acoustic instruments on "Bike Song" puts forward a more leisurely attitude, all while Kolb’s breathtaking voice and lyrics drive the music melodically and emotionally. Making Moves is the sound of an artist in transition, responding to their surroundings and carving out a path for themselves.

Originally hailing from Newburgh NY, Kolb moved to New York City in 2012 to pursue his dream of becoming a professional opera singer. He had been studying/performing with the Hudson Opera Theater since high school and received a music scholarship at Brooklyn College; with both an effective educational path and solid work ethic established, the road ahead seemed clear. It was around this time that he became exposed to Brooklyn's effervescent DIY scene through working at music venues like the now-defunct Palisades and became inspired by the seemingly endless array of eclectic local talent passing through its doors.

Fed up with the classical world's stifling financial restrictions, Kolb dove head-first into the underground and soon found himself working in ensembles with some of New York City's premier composers and performance artists. Since moving to Brooklyn, Kolb has collaborated with an impressive list of talented artists including roles in plays/performances directed by Becca Kaufman (Ava Luna) and Sarah Kinlaw (Softspot) as well as musical collaborations with Tredicci Baci and Zach Phillips (OSR Tapes, Blanche Blanche Blanche). Kolb also plays bass in the bands Thanks For Coming and Water From Your Eyes and is a member of the choir at Oratory Church of St. Boniface in downtown Brooklyn.
